As a s/w engineer, weekdays are hectic. Just work work !!!. Gone are those college days, the time we enjoyed without knowing its value. For me weekends are 4 sleeping and visiting.
So one Saturday evening, I decided to go to my grandmother’s house. It was just 7 to 8 kms away from my house. I took my bike and paced. On the way I thought about her. Before I started earning, she was the only source 4 my pocket money. The way she cared, her dosa and mulaku podi is famous in our family. ……… hmmm.
Finally I reached her house, gave a large horn. She peeped from the window and saw me. In excitement she called ‘Moni kutta….nii aanoda……’ . She opened the door hugged me and kissed me. As she was shorter, I have to bend a lot to give my cheeks . Like always I started talking a lot. Whatever crap i said, she listened to all. Finally It was Dosa time…………yippe…………
She started making Dosas. Usually i will eat only two. But if it is Amummas Dosa then the count will go up to five to six. If her ‘molaku podi’ is also there……..hehehe, it can go upto ten or even more…………
So while making Dosa, she asked me a simple question(4 her).
“Actually, what is there so much to work. These days u seemed to be very busy. U even forget to call me also………”. Her tone was bit desperate.
I too become sad. What can I tell her. How can I explain that. How can i explain the criticallity of deadlines. Should I explain the stressful nature of my work. Will she be able to understand the OOP concepts, even if I explain it a lot. How how how……… Which part of my work can I explain.
Even if i explain these things, she wont understand a bit. So what can I do. Any way I needed to give an explanation. An explanation which should be short and simple. At this time she was pouring ‘Dosa maavu’ on the ‘dosa kallu’.
Idea………
She was busy making dosas 4 me. I shook her hands, so that the dosa maavu fell in a weird shape(usually it is in round shape). She was also surprised by my action. After making that Dosa, I asked her to make another dosa in the same shape. She asked me why. She tried a lot and put a lot of effort to make other dosas in the same weird shape. A lot of time and energy was wasted. All dosas are getting in some other shape, but not as the shape I asked for. She tried again and again. But after ten trials(means ten dosas
), I said my tummy was full. Finally she gave up. I smiled
She asked me why. I told “See, my work is like that. U r not able to copy the simple shape I asked u to do. We r also asked to do the same thing. U know, copy some ones code and paste it on ours(with a big laugh in my mind). What a difficult thing, and also we have to do it within given time and with no mistakes. “
Her eyes widened. A sort of admirtion was there in her eyes. She didnt say a word.
But I could read her mind. It was clear to me that my explanation of copy paste with dosa was well enough to proove my hectic work schedule to her.
Hmmm, from that day she didnt complained me even if i forgot to call her. I was not fooling her. I just tried to explain the hard nature of my work and not the exact thing I am doing. And as u know, software devolpoment is the feild where systematic approach, planning, designing, hardwork is very important and not just a copy paste thing. But the small amount of copy paste part in my work saved the day.
